Introduction

The Department is actively involved in provision of clinical services, to the masses of the region, teaching and training of doctors, under and post graduate medical students, psychology interns, nursing staff and paramedics. Members of the team are involved in research, conference presentations and article publications. The department enjoys multi dimensional collaboration with different departments.

Vision

Our vision is to make the department a center of excellence regarding truly outstanding biopsychosocially oriented clinical care, recognized teaching, training & assessment programs and promotion of a rich academic milieu that produces the highest quality scientific research.

Mission

The mission is to provide clinical services to all segments of society and reaching the unreached. To decrease stigma, increase awareness about mental health, prevention of mental disorders and promotion of healthy behaviors.

Goal

Goals are to improve care, treatment and recovery of people with mental disorders and substance abuse, to make the department a hub for capacity building thus providing psychiatric training to medical and allied health specialities, to include research in the routine clinical duties, to clear different myths and misconceptions related to mental health, provision of counselling services, incorporation of mental health into primary health care services of the region, to increase collaboration with different organizations who can be supportive to the cause of mental health and to bring the behavioral sciences and psychiatry in the main stream of medical sciences.

The Department being the only facility in public sector is providing clinical and forensic services to a large catchment area of eight districts. Out patient and liaison services are provided to both Allied & D.H.Q. Hospitals while 50 bedded inpatient unit is situated in DHQ Hospital only where round the clock emergency services are also provided. A Model Drug Abuses Treatment Center is providing services to addicts and their families. Patients in District and Central jails are also being treated.
